The JCC building has been demolished

To make way for the Wood Partner’s mixed-use development, one thing had to happen.  The JCC had to be demolished.  Residents and businesses were made aware of Exxel Pacific’s schedule last week.  So, in the hopes of documenting construction of Wedgwood’s first mixed-use building and Wood Partner’s first project in Washington State, I thought I’d try something slightly different. It didn’t work perfectly, but I think it’s sort of fun to look at (requires Microsoft Silverlight). The JCC’s Final Hours on May 31st. The Walls Came Tumbling Down. These didn’t work perfectly, but I’ll try to create more ‘synths’ as Read More …

Wood Partners To Start Construction

As we reported earlier, Wood Partners is scheduled to begin construction tomorrow, June 1st.  Today, the Seattle PI Real Estate Blog posted an updated along with a rendering of the project. According to the Seattle PI post, Steve Orser with Wood Partners is quoted as saying, “We are thrilled that our initial project is in Wedgwood, a terrific neighborhood well-known for its excellent walkability and small-town feel…The area is very desirable and has seen steady growth since 2000, and we expect that to continue.”  Wood Partners is “committed to developing a project that has a strong sense of connection to Read More …

Work on the Wedgwood Apartments to begin on June 1st

This week, businesses along 35th Ave NE and residents along NE 86th Street, NE 87th Street, and 38th Ave NE received a letter from Exxel Pacific about the upcoming plans to demolish the old JCC building to make way for a 91 unit apartment building (84 apartments + 7 live/work units).  The letter apologizes in advance for the unavoidable disruption and describes the construction schedule to be approximately 12-14 months long and will end around July 10, 2012. Update on Wood Partners' Project for the Former JCC Property

NOTE: Much of this information is in the May edition of the Wedgwood Echo newsletter, which is mailed to all WCC members.  This begs the question…”Why aren’t you a member?” On March 26th, members of the Wedgwood Land Use Committee and the Wedgwood Action Group met with Wood Partners to learn about their plans for the JCC property at 8606 — 35th Ave NE.  Wood Partners’ willingness to meet with our two community groups was a very appreciated gesture, as there is no public notification requirement for their project.  According to Wood Partners, their project includes the following changes to Read More …

Beautiful Mosaic from JCC Returned to Artist

Those familiar with the old Jewish Community Center (JCC) located along the east side of 35th Ave NE between NE 86th and 87th Streets, may remember a custom mosaic that graced the entry (pictured at left). You may also know that the old JCC building will be demolished soon to make way for an apartment complex. We are happy to report that Wood Partners, the owner and developer of the soon-to-be and yet unnamed apartment building, has worked to return this beautiful artwork back to the artists. A happy ending for this beautiful piece of work.

Wood Partners Updates Wedgwood On Their Project

On Saturday, March 26th, Steve Orser with Wood Partners presented their proposed project for the former JCC property to members of the Wedgwood Land Use Committee (WLUC) and Wedgwood Action Group (WAG).  This gesture by Wood Partners to meet with our community groups to describe the project was very appreciated.  The WLUC presented Mr. Orser with a Wedgwood t-shirt and welcomed Wood Partners to the community and both WLUC and WAG shared their desire that the project is a success for Wood Partners (their first in greater Seattle) and for Wedgwood. The purpose of the meeting was to find out Read More …

The JCC Property Has Been Purchased By Wood Partners

Several years ago, Murray Franklyn purchased the former Jewish Community Center (JCC) property at the corner of 35th Ave NE and NE 86th Street with the intention of bringing Wedgwood’s first mixed-use, residential building.  Vocal community opposition to the project developed although an agreement was ultimately reached and the project permit.  However, then the economic downturn occurred and financing for the project collapsed.  Since then, Murray Franklyn hired Kidder Mathews to sell the property on their behalf. Today, the Daily Journal of Commerce reports that the property has been sold to Wood Partners, a national developer who just moved into Read More …

Murray Franklyn/JCC Site Update

Recently, For Sale signs popped up on the old Jewish Community Center (JCC) site, which is currently owned by Murray Franklyn.  Recently, the building has been the scene of graffiti and miscellaneous junk.  However, most of Wedgwood knows this site to be the scene of a proposed multi-story and multi-use condo project that sparked community opposition.  You can read a history of the opposition on the Wedgwood Action Group blog (not currently being updated) or see the details of the agreement here.  When the economy started to turn, the funding for the condo project dried up and it was never Read More …
