Delicious 2008 Outdoor Cinema

This year’s event seemed more like a Bite of Wedgwood with hot dogs and ice cream courtesy of Metropolitan Market, Varlamos’ calzones, Atlas Food’s barbecued pork sandwiches and slaw and iced beverages compliments of Café Van Gogh and Starbucks. Not that anyone is complaining about free food! Approximately 650 attendees also enjoyed activities including face painting, a water balloon toss, kick ball and visits from Bobo the clown and Fire Stations #40 before settling down to watch Bend it Like Beckham.

A big thanks to our long-standing platinum sponsor, HomeStreet Bank, their dedication is truly unparalleled! Metropolitan Market’s generous and enthusiastic partnership underscores their commitment to the community. We’re so pleased to have our returning gold sponsor, Windermere, who issued tons of free photograph/fingerprint safety ID cards to kids at their booth.

We appreciate our bronze sponsors: Café Van Gogh, Desert Sun Tanning, Edward Jones, Fresh, The House Reform Church, and Starbucks. Kudos to all volunteers! Mars Hill Church Seattle did a great job of coordinating the games and helping to clean up.

Going green! The WCCencouraged sponsors to use green products (e.g. compostable plates) and set up three recycle/compost/waste stations at the event. Thanks to the boy scouts from Troop 166, who helped attendees get their items in the right bins, and to trustees and neighbors for lending their bins for the evening.

Troop 388 also participated in the event, popping popcorn throughout the evening!

Of course this event would not be possible without our gracious host: John Miner, Principal of Thornton Creek School (previously AE2 @ Decatur).

Donations to Ronald McDonald House were down significantly; please remember to give back to our community by donating to local food banks.

We welcome your suggestions to making this event even greater; if you’re interested in sponsoring, participating or volunteering in next year’s Outdoor Cinema, contact either Brian Turnbull or Helen Yee. Brian Turnbull can be reached at
