On Sunday afternoon, September 25th at 4:45 PM a car went out of control on NE 80th Street and crashed into a telephone pole.
Standing with our backs to 35th Ave NE and looking west on NE 80th Street, we see one of the damaged cars. The offending driver drove on the sidewalk, side-swiping cars.
Eyewitnesses reported that a car, an older-model Lexus, was traveling at a high rate of speed going downhill on NE 80th Street. Between NE 34th to 35th Avenues NE, the car drove on the sidewalk on the north side of NE 80th Street.
Fortunately the car never reached the arterial 35th Ave NE as it careened from the north side of NE 80th Street to the south side, traveling downhill, eastward.
The car damaged several parked cars before crashing into a telephone pole. It is unclear whether the driver lost control due to speed, or whether he was impaired in some way. Pictured at right is the south side of NE 80th Street with one of the damaged cars.
Witnesses called 911. Police arrived, put the driver in handcuffs and took him away in a patrol car.
On the south side of NE 80th Street, tire tracks are visible and there is another side-swiped car, damaged on Sunday afternoon, September 25th.
