In September 2020, the Wedgwood Community Council published a post on our website honoring the land itself upon which our community resides and the first people whose traditional lands we live on. Our statement also acknowledged systemic racism which has led to pervasive inequities and unjust treatment of our Black and Brown neighbors for centuries and the role that the WCC may have played to perpetuate these systems in the past. Finally, we affirmed that Black Lives Matter and that we stand with our Black and Brown neighbors in support of true equity with the hope of creating a community that is more welcoming and safe for everyone.
While inherent within this previous statement was our support for the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander community, we believe it important to be explicit in our support at this moment as violence directed towards the AAPI community has risen during the pandemic. Further, as May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we want to celebrate alongside our AAPI neighbors and reaffirm our support for them.
The Wedgwood Community Council stands united with those in the Asian and Pacific Islander community who are experiencing heightened fears brought on by increased acts of hate and violence. We support true equity and hope to create a community that is welcoming, inclusive, and safe for everyone. #StopAsianHate #StopAAPIHate
