Wedgwood Misses Out on Grant to Design New Park

On May 9th, the Wedgwood Parks Committee submitted an application for a Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) Small & Simple grant to develop a design for Wedgwood’s soon-to-be new park at the Morningside Substation Site. Having discussed the project with the Parks Department and Department of Neighborhoods, we knew that the “Wedgwood Deserves A Park (Design Phase)” project was a long shot due to Parks Department budget constraints. Two Small & Simple Grants Submitted for Wedgwood
Monday, May 9th, was the deadline for this latest round of Neighborhood Matching Fund Small & Simple Grants through the Department of Neighborhood. To our knowledge, there were two grant applications submitted for Wedgwood: 1) for pedestrian improvements around Wedgwood Elementary and 2) design services for as part of park development on the Morningside Substation. Wedgwood Parks Meeting a Success!
About 150 people packed into the meeting room at Wedgwood Presbyterian Church for the WCC’s January 2011 general meeting, co-hosted by Seattle Parks and Wedgwood Parks. The purpose of the meeting was to formally announce the WCC’s recommended site for park acquisition, the Morningside Substation, using legislatively approved funds from the 2008 Parks and Open Green Spaces Levy. Wedgwoodians began showing up around 6:45 in anticipation of the meeting and to get their hands on the new Wedgwood t-shirt. JAN 12th – WCC & Seattle Parks Co-Sponsored Public Meeting
In 2008, Seattle voters approved the Parks & Green Spaces Levy which identified Wedgwood NE of Dahl Field as deficient in park space. As a result, legislatively-approved funding is available to our community to acquire a new park. The WCC’s Parks Committee began soliciting ideas for potential park acquisition sites and hosted a community meeting in March 2010. Since that meeting, the Parks Committee has integrated the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department’s site selection criteria with those values shared by the community at the March meeting.
